What is capsular contracture?
Capsular contracture is one of the most common side effects breast lift augmentation surgeries can have. They constitute a natural response of the body to a foreign objets, so, this condition can happen with other objects such as pacemakers and artificial joints.
It is, also, one of the most painful and annoying side effects implants can have. The body’s response to the object is to cover it up with tissue. This condition is known as tissue capsule or scar capsule. One of the first manifestations is swollowing of the area, and pain. The capsule tightens and squeezes the implant, making the breast feel hard and unnatural.
The solution to capsular contracture is surgical, there is no other cure than to remove the capsule, and in some cases the implant and the whole mammary gland as well. The reasons for this condition’s development are yet unclear. A patient that has undergone a breast lift augmentation can very well develop capsular contracture in one implant and not in the other. In case of removal of the implant and its subsequent replacement, the new implant can also develop capsular contracture.
Preventive measures include avoid massaging and touching the breasts right after the surgery, and massive doses of antibiotics.
